There are still a few dual core smartphones expected to be released this year when Nvidia announced at the Mobile World Congress that they are ready to release a quad core mobile processor by August.
The latest quad core processor code named “Kal-El” will be far superior to the Tegra 2 dual core processor that is being used by such models as the Motorola Atrix, LG Optimus 2X and the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1.
The Tegra 3 will have a clock speed of 1.5 GHz and have four cores. In comparison it can easily outperform the Intel Core 2 Duo T7200 in processing power, which shows just how powerful it is. Imagine owning a smartphone that is more powerful than your old Core 2 Duo desktop, that’s what we are going to expect in the coming months.
Here are some of the features we can expect from the Tegra 3
- Support for resolutions of up to 2560×1600 pixels
- Media Processing Engine with NEON support
- 4 Cortex A9 using a shared 1 MB L2 Cache
- 12 core GPU
- 32 bit LPDDR2 memory controller
Expect to see devices using the Tegra 3 at the end of the year and early 2012.
